Terry Morris Biomedical TechnicianCrothall Services GroupPark Ridge HospitalFletcher, NC With only 36 hours notice, on January 29, Terry packed up as many tools as he could carry and joined a team of physicians on a relief mission to earthquake-devastated Haiti. Clinical equipment was in great need of repair at Adventist Hospital in Port au Prince, and teams were working around the clock to rebuild the hospital while others treated a non-stop flow of victims. Terry was able to diagnose and correct the anesthesia machine problems quickly – even rebuilding one from spare parts. In the following days, Terry filled a demand for small aspirators, which were being used at a high rate. He figured out how to modify a high pressure regulator to fill the E-cylinders, one of them just in time for a coding baby! Water supply became an issue for the hospital when the new treatment system failed to work at installation. Terry had barely come up with a solution to that problem, when he was called to the OR where a sterilizer was on fire. With these fires out (literally), Terry was finally able to help with patients and visit the Adventist Hospital grounds. “The devastation was unbelievable,” Terry commented. The campus was the refugee camp for thousands of Haitian families. Before leaving, Terry was able to install a newer Aespire anesthesia machine in the OR and repair an instrument sterilizer. Fixing the sterilizer relieved the staff of the time-consuming and dangerous practice of using sterilized pots, which had to be carried back and forth to open burners outside the hospital. “I have only heard very positive comments about the valuable service Terry gave on the recent trip to Haiti. Staff said they would not have been able to do everything they did without his skills. They said that every group going should have a person like him as part of the team. Crothall is to be commended for making this happen on very short notice,” said Ken Cobb, director of engineering, Park Ridge Hospital. |
